Returns

Everybody hates returns and so do we, although we still have one of the most relaxed returns policies in the industry. We have tightened things up a bit, however. Whereas customers used to be able to return anything anytime for any reason, pretty much, we have now, like all our competition, adopted a 25% restocking fee for returns more than 60 days after the original sale.

Naturally this does not apply to defective returns. We continue to comply with various manufacturer's guidelines for returns of defective materials.

Chicago's Incredible Reach

One of the greatest advantages of having a branch in the Chicago area is the incredible reach it gives us when shipping via UPS. For example, we can ship from Buffalo Grove, IL, via UPS ground and our package bound for any of fourteen states from Oklahoma to New York will arrive in two days. In concert with our other branches in Nevada, Florida, and Massachusetts, our Chicago branch helps make delivery from Security Lock Distributors faster all across the United States.

Still filling the giant shoes of Mr. David Jeschke who is recovering nicely from surgery. We are all looking forward to his return - especially me! People regularly refer to David as the nicest guy in the world. I think they're right. We all wish him the best.

David is expected back at the end of June.

When you have an entity with which you can only communicate by fax, and they ... well, if I can't say something nice I guess I better not say anything at all.

Busy

Last couple of days have really picked up here, from every kind of customer. If you ask me, I think that's a good sign!

Check out our specials at www.seclock.com

Due to a buy out we have a lot of hinges, kickplates, and even exit devices we didn't have before. It seems like I am learning a new line every month or two. Good exercise for the brain.

I am beginning to feel pretty good about my Assa Abloy knowledge these days - Sargent, Corbin-Russwin, and even Yale. Especially in the Sargent and Corbin lines we really have a LOT of stock.

Need a tech support number? We have a full listing online in our RMA section. Check it out!

No IR Price Increases Planned

Of course, right after I write this I know that Ingersol Rand will send out price increase notices, but the word right now is that, given that they raised their prices on various lines 2 or 3 times last year, they have no plans at this time to raise prices again in the immediate future.

In one way I think this is too bad, because my Schlage price book is really raggedy and by now I usually would have had a new one. One big upside is that maybe Von Duprin will have to put off their annual random part number changes! That would be a treat.

Continuous Hinges with ETP Prep

Every week I am having a nightmare order. What is it? Full mortise continuous hinges prepared for electric power transfer.

Some hinge companies have a form to fill out to show where, exactly, you want the prep to be. Other hinge companies leave you more on your own. Typically what happens is that the order is held up at the factory because of the absence of some detail.

When ordering full mortise continuous hinges prepared for EPT, always remember to tell your vendor, in addition to the usual details of finish and height, the distance between the top of the hinge and the centerline of the prep, the handing, and whose EPT you will be using. That will save us all a lot of trouble.

Communication

I will be trying to post daily from now on. There is a lot going on in the hardware industry and it bears discussion. There are many fears concerning our current national economic state of affairs. Yet from my position in a national hardware distribution, I see a slowing that is by no means terribly drastic or universal. While that may come, what I see right now is a number of new, large jobs appearing every day. So there is work out there, my friends. It might be harder to get, so that means we all have to get smarter.

All the best in these challenging times.

I Want a Cup of Coffee but I'm Stuck on the Chat

Security Lock has a Chat on their web site and I'm it. I'm getting part numbers for Schlage electrified cylindrical and mortise locks with RX switch, but I want a cup of coffee. He wants them to be compatible with Medeco full size interchangeable core, but I want a cup of coffee. I want a cup of coffee.
